Energy resiliency is a prime concern to the Ashram and all who live on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake – a remote area on the power grid vulnerable to frequent power outages.
Climate change has highlighted the fragility of the electric grid and recent extreme weather has taught us lessons about how deep our need for emergency power can go.
With your help the Ashram will take its first step with Photovoltaic (PV) panels and install panels to capture and convert energy from daylight into electricity that will help power our community.

Solar energy is an infinitely renewable energy resource. Photovoltaic (PV) panels convert daylight into electricity that is then stored in batteries. This power provides energy resiliency and emergency preparedness for the Ashram during extreme weather emergencies and when the grid power is out. It also contributes to reduced utility costs through rebates from FortisBC based on the power generated.
What Photovoltaic (PV) panels support during a power outage:
- Appliances for meal preparation
- Geo-thermal heating and electrical lighting at Mandala House – the emergency gathering centre
- External communications – phone and internet systems
- Peace of mind and the safe care of residents and guests

Yasodhara Ashram is a Carbon Neutral community and our track record is at the leading edge of the worldwide movement to prevent and reduce environmental impacts.
We have a history of sustainable building techniques and energy conscious renovations, including the installation of geo-exchange heating and solar thermal panels in Mandala House and the Barn.
Although higher capital expenditures are often called for, the long-term benefits make these investments in our future worthwhile, and necessary.
