Altar Collage

In line with the theme of renunciation, this art project focuses on limitation. How can I express myself within set boundaries?

The Altar Collage project uses collage art as a way of limiting the mind and creating a focus for prayer and devotion.

Long-term karma yogi Judith Grob, an avid collage fan shares: “Making collages helps me open up to new possibilities. Rather than work with a preconceived notion of what my work should look like, I am bound by the images I find. There is a meditative quality to leafing through magazines, scissors in hand. What is my eye drawn to? Once I have gathered all attractive pieces, I put them on display. Now my mind starts connecting. Often the colors I look for aren’t quite there, or images have the wrong shape or size. By shifting, discarding, leafing through magazines again, and the occasional tearing and cutting of material, a picture emerges. Not a picture I could have ever imagined beforehand. But the picture that was waiting to arise.”

Directions

1. Take time to tune in by chanting your favorite mantra or do a practice that you are working with.

2. Leaf through magazines and cut or tear out what speaks to you.

3. Looking over all pictures, start arranging on the piece of cardboard. What works for you?

4. When satisfied, glue your project onto the cardboard.

5. Choose what form your altar will take, and fold the cardboard accordingly.

What has emerged for you? We would love to see pictures of your Altar Collage. Email photos to communications@yasodhara.org.
