A Karma Yoga Ashram
Founded on the principle of service, the Ashram is a living example of a generosity-based community. Karma Yoga is the practice of selfless service, and is an essential part of life here at Yasodhara Ashram.
“I’ve come to understand cleaning as a way of making sacred space for someone to enter into, and I acknowledge that when I do these things I’m creating that space inwards as well. Karma Yoga taught me that even the smallest acts in life can be an offering.” Maiya Irvine

About Karma Yoga
“Selfless service will make you Divine.” Gurudev Sivananda
Karma Yoga teaches us how to work, how to work together and how to understand ourselves in relation to others. The yoga of action helps us take our theoretical knowledge of spiritual life and test it out in our daily lives.
It is the spirit with which we approach our work that transforms our actions into the practice of Karma Yoga. Karma Yoga is marked by willingness, care, consideration and cooperation. By spiritualizing our work, we can lift any task from the menial to the meaningful. This mental attitude/spiritual ideal can be carried with you, away from the Ashram into your daily life and work.
At Yasodhara Ashram, Karma Yoga is translated into our daily work as service to the community. We work together in the kitchen, garden and grounds, we build houses and repair our buildings, we clean and care for our spaces. Karma Yogis run our office and registrations, publish books and newsletters. We also meet together to reflect on the events of the day and support each other in our efforts.
