Co-Stewardship at the Ashram

So many people love the Ashram and want this centre of Light to thrive far into the future.

Now that the core group of Ashram residents and swamis are in our 60s, 70s and almost 80s (!), we are inviting in younger generations of Ashram friends, karma yogis, teachers and allies to join us in creating new opportunities to support what lays ahead.

We have titled the initiative, Co-Stewardship, to describe a caring, heartfelt way of working together to sustain this multi-generational spiritual community on this beautiful land.

In the past year, we have held six live gatherings with people from local and distant locations.

What has unfolded is a harmonious opening to possibility.

Our Actions So Far Have Been:

  • to assess where we are and to question what is needed
  • to invite younger teachers back to co-teach with seasoned Elders at the Ashram and online (a great response– and is happening as I write!)
  • to invite returning karma yogis to experiment with new ways of being here, such as hybrid stays, which blend remote work with Karma Yoga and Ashram life

NEW This Month:

  • a visiting teacher is gathering origin stories of Yasodhara practices so future teachers have a handy resource
  • the Ashram Alternative Housing Committee (AAHC) is investigating future off-grid housing sites, and exploring options to meet different housing needs. A tent platform on a potential new site is being built this month!

That’s a taste of what has been happening with Co-Stewardship. We are also blessed to have many dedicated younger people here leading areas from garden to hospitality to repair and maintenance.

Co-stewardship gatherings are scheduled bi-monthly, with occasional pop-ups to welcome visitors from afar.

It is wonderful to witness diverse cohorts coming together into an expanded interconnected network. Stay tuned for updates.

In Light,

Swami Lalitananda
