2020 Garden Lead

Taking a leading role in the Yasodhara Ashram Garden is an ideal opportunity for you if want to experience living within a community setting while learning the technical aspects of growing food. Located in the rural community of Kootenay Bay, this eight-month program works with a full farm season starting March 1 and running through to October 31. During this time, you will develop your skills and gain knowledge and experience of small-scale organic agriculture.

With a focus on sustainability and stewardship of the land – from seeding to harvesting to preparation of food for ‘marketing’ direct to our onsite commercial kitchen – you will learn about how to best support soil fertility and practice crop rotation, seed saving, companion planting, composting and green manures.

Working alongside the Farm Manager to coordinate weekly tasks, you will develop and follow seasonal planting plans and practice budget management. You will gain the experience necessary to start your own growing business in the future and lead teams of Learning Residents, volunteers and retreat guests to complete daily tasks such as harvesting, watering, weeding and preparing beds to receive seeds and transplants.

This is a unique opportunity to deepen your skill-set as you offer service and expand your own self-understanding. You will participate in Karma Yoga five days a week and receive the support of an Ashram liaison person, in addition to your area mentor. Weekly workshops, daily reflection, morning yoga classes, and evening satsangs enrich this program.

You will have half a day each week to focus on a study project of your choice. Examples of previous projects are seed saving, foliar feed teas, culinary herb production and vermiculture. Space in the field will be allocated so your project can have room to grow.

REMUNERATION

While these are not paid staff positions, they are spiritual and career/life development opportunities. You will receive meals and accommodation for the length of your stay, at a value of $1400 per month. Seasonal and primarily locally sourced meals are provided, with our kitchen able to cater to numerous dietary requirements.

COMMITMENT

This is an eight-month position, with the opportunity to extend your stay to further enrich your experience. Many people find longer-term residency for one or two years or more to be of great value.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Applicants should have some previous experience in agriculture; familiarity with organic production methods is preferred but not essential.

  • Knowledge to support overall fertility and plant management (e.g. crop rotation, amendment application, companion planting)
  • Greenhouse management (seeding, planting and transplanting)
  • Experience with tools and machinery would be helpful
  • Experience of irrigation systems

Important qualities are an open mind, a positive disposition and interest in living and learning within a spiritual community. Students in education, agriculture, environmental sciences, and related fields are encouraged to apply.

  • Ability to work with a team to prioritize and oversee daily, weekly and seasonal activities (weeding, planting, harvesting, record keeping)
  • Ability to work hard physically outdoors in all seasons (heat, sun, rain, cold)
  • High level of personal motivation and self-management
  • Ability to lead Learning Residents and karma yogis/volunteers with daily projects or tasks (planning, preparing, overseeing, checking in and follow through until completion)
  • Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with Food Flow areas (preserving kitchen, orchard, kitchen) during a busy season
  • Ability to maintain on-going open communication with Garden Manager
  • An attitude of service, a positive disposition and an interest in living and learning within a spiritual community
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES – ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITY AND FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Work with Garden Manager to identify and prioritize daily, weekly and seasonal activities as they relate to care and stewardship of the garden – watering, seeding, transplanting, harvesting, weeding, maintenance of structures, equipment and tools.
  • Participate in weekly Garden Tour with Garden Manager and Learning Residents
  • Lead Learning Residents and karma yogis, overseeing daily projects or tasks (planning, preparing, checking in and follow through until completion)
  • Coordinate with Food Flow Managers (preserving kitchen, garden, kitchen, orchard) through informal daily check-ins and formal weekly meetings (Food Flow meeting)
  • Support overall fertility and plant management, (crop rotation, fertilizer, companion planting) and general health and wellbeing of garden
  • Greenhouse & Hoophouse management
  • Daily & Weekly recording & monthly updating of harvest records
  • Communicate regularly concerns and observations to Garden Manager and/or Learning Residents team
