- Family Week – Our annual Family Week was a great success! Just over 60 parents and children participated and the Ashram was alive with kids playing, being creative and enjoying themselves even through the many thunderstorms we had during the week. The kids were introduced to mantra, the Divine Mother Prayer dance and satsang. They were creative in the Painting Palace, active with games and sports and offered wonderful performances, art and stories at the grand gala at the end of the week. We look forward to next year!
- Supporting Community Culture – The Ashram is participating in this year’s Columbia Basin Cultural Tour happening on August 10 and 11. This is a free, regional, self-directed tour for people to experience a taste of the many artisans, galleries and cultural sites around the Columbia Basin. The Ashram is also participating in Kootenay Lake Art Connection art walk – another self-guided, regional tour showcasing local artists in business galleries. Paintings of two East Shore artists – Shirley Wyngard and Garry Sly – are on display in Mandala House until September 2nd.
- Anusha Dance Weekend – The Yoga is Dance, Dance is Yoga weekend in July culminated in marvelous performances by Anusha Fernando and her students, including long-time Ashram dancers. The Temple provided a beautiful setting for the theme of Refuge: Finding our True Home – Anusha’s seventh annual offering at the Ashram.
- Strawberry Social – Our 24th Annual Strawberry Social held in June was a beautiful coming together of friends and community. Nearly 300 people came to celebrate, eat strawberries and enjoy wonderful performances by Slava Doval’s Dancefusion and her youth dancers in the Temple of Light. We thank everyone for their joyous energy and donations to our book sale! We collected almost $1000 to go to the Crawford Bay Hot Lunch program.
- Fall Outreach – Finding Peace in Shifting Times In May, Swami Samayananda was in Calgary for a series of workshops focusing on this year’s theme, Return to Centre. The workshops were powerful, revealing thoughts and beliefs that create stress, with the antidote to bring us back to centre. These same workshops – valuable support for these shifting times – will be offered in Ottawa and Halifax this fall. Click here for more information. - Temple of Light Award of Merit – On June 21 at a Toronto gala, Patkau Architects were recognized with an award of merit at the 2019 AZ Awards for design and architecture for buildings under 1000 square meters. Azure Magazine received 1,175 submissions from 50 countries. To narrow down this unprecedented number of entries to a shortlist of 68 finalists, they gathered together a select jury of international experts in March at Azure’s offices in Toronto. Patkau Architects also won the People’s Choice award in the same category where the general public had an opportunity to vote on their favorite building.
