| Inspired Lives author Catherine Kidd performs
a spoken work piece from her newest book at the launch
in Montreal. |
On
the heels of some fantastic press in the Toronto
Star, and increasing media buzz, timeless books hosted
an exciting book launch in Montreal this past Monday. Held
in the cozy Café Esperanza, editor of Inspired Lives, Clea Mcdougall
opened the evening by welcoming everyone. Being in Montreal,
the home of ascent magazine, the launch
had special meaning for Clea. “We are here to launch
a book, but mostly to thank everyone who has given so much
to the vision of ascent.”
Juniper Glass read from her interview with bell hooks on love
and it’s place in social action, Annabelle Chvostek of
the Automated Prayer Machine played a captivating solo set
of her own tunes and a traditional Slovakian piece, Billy Mavreas
presented a strip of his renowned Boy Priest complete with
flip chart, pointer, and audience participation, and then Catherine
Kidd performed a brand new spoken work piece from her newest
book that was hot off the press.
There was a warm feeling in the room, and I had a strong sense
of the community that has grown around ascent magazine. So
many brilliant artists and authors have been involved with
ascent over the years. This launched felt like a celebration
of these Montreal contributors, and everyone involved with
the magazine, past and present. The book itself is essentially
a concentrated, potent story of the inspired lives in that
community.
Along with the entire ascent staff, the book’s designer
Todd Stewart, and cover photographer Chloe Dulude, were also
there to celebrate the birth of Inspired Lives.
