The rooms in the Barn (formerly known as Goloka) are taking shape and space is being defined as the last three weeks work has focused on installing, taping and plastering the drywall. Within the next week or so, the rooms on the second floor will start being painted and the main floor walls will finish being drywalled.
“It’s exciting to be part of this project,” said Nils Elris, a professional drywaller who lives in Crawford Bay and has been guiding the karma yogis since mid-December. “I gained my skills while working on a similar project in Florida when I was in my late-twenties. I was involved in a spiritual community and it was valuable experience in working as part of a team.”
The building is holding it’s heat nicely now as all of the insulation has been put in. The insulation in the walls and the floors makes each room feel and sound acoustically contained.
“Working on the Barn has helped me understand what it means to lay a foundation,” said Young Adult intern Owen Robertson, as he smoothed plaster over rough edges. “It’s become a symbol of what I want to manifest in my life. I look up to the professional tradesman and see them as examples of how these skills can be applied.”
Once the drywalling and painting are completed, then floors can be laid, doors hung, bathroom fixtures installed and wood trim added. The work up until this point has focused on the inside of the building, although the exterior work has recently commenced with the installation of the exterior siding.
