Even as the temperature drops and the days grow shorter,
work on Goloka continues.
A few weeks ago the geothermal heating system was started
up and within days the insulation will be completely
installed. The building has the latest in energy
saving technology including a hot water heat exchanger
which uses the heat from hot water going down the
drain to heat water going up into the taps.
Soon the exterior siding will be installed using an innovative
planking system with boards made out of concrete that
have the appearance of wood yet are completely fire
retardant.
The wall framing is completed, and the rough electrical,
plumbing, vacuum system and heating distribution systems
are now finished. All of these systems lead to the
mechanical room, which is like the heart of the building.
The project feels like it is moving into a new phase.
Roughly 50% of the drywall is in place now so it is easy
to see the shapes and sizes of the rooms. The spaces
seem versatile, each room full of potential. “The
design is very yogic,” said James Gates. “We
wanted to keep it flexible, rather than lock ourselves
into how the rooms will be used.”
“It’s been exciting to watch the progress,” said
labour foreman and Young Adult intern Claire Parnell. “There’s
been a huge amount of change in the one month since I started
doing karma yoga at Goloka. It’s been valuable learning
and an amazing process of surrender.”
