sustainability

Living with awareness in both the inner and outer worlds, the Ashram is deeply committed to participating in positive solutions to a growing environmental crisis that asks us to reduce our carbon footprint.

A Comprehensive Approach
With a goal to be carbon-neutral by its 50th anniversary (2013), the Ashram has developed a comprehensive program of sustainability that matured in 2007- 2008. This program embraces menu planning, food ordering, housekeeping, solar and geothermal heating systems, and carbon offsets for guest travel.

Success
As a result of these practices, in 2007 and 2008, the Ashram saved more than 155,000 kWh, enough energy to power 10 homes for a year. In October 2008, the Ashram was awarded the FortisBC PowerSense Conservation Excellence Award for its commitment to reduce energy consumption by adapting innovative and efficient technologies and solutions”.

The Ashram has become an example of how positive changes can be made, even within the financial constraints typical of a not-for-profit entity.

History
A formal environmental program has existed at the Ashram since 1994, when the first professional energy audit was completed. This audit established a multi-year program for upgrades and retrofits of building envelopes, lighting, and heating and domestic hot water systems. It added a new dimension to the 3-Rs program reduce-reuse-recycle), in place here since the 1970’s.

Future Goals
Guests and staff have greeted the developing sustainability program with enthusiasm, inspiring the Ashram to go beyond measures to increase efficiency, reduce operating costs or qualify for government rebates. This year, and the years leading up to its 50th anniversary (2013), the Ashram will pioneer far-reaching changes that reach beyond on-site operations and business practices.
